Las Monedas Cave

Las Monedas was discovered in1952, by a team of road builders from the Regional Committee of Cantabria directed by Garci'a Lorenzo in Puente Viesgo.

It is a big cave that has around 300 metres of depth. The four chambers and various galleries that make up this cave are separated by agglomerations of partially welded blocks due to the limestone formations of great beauty and colour.

The samples of cave art are found in a small lateral chamber next to the central one. It contains black paintings of animals and a panel of engravings.

The black paintings represent horses, reindeers, goats, bison, a deer-like animal and a bear as well as some other inderminate animal. There is also an extensive group of complex signs and paintings.

In the hall some materials of the Bronze age, and the Iron age were found and some Lithic pieces as well as some coins from the Catholic Kings period which gave name to this cavity.
